TLC achieves highest score given by US environmental Protection Agency's Smartway program
The SmartWay program was started in 2004 by the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and it identifies products and services that reduce transportation-related emissions. However, the impact of the program is much greater as the SmartWay brand signifies a partnership amongst government, businesses and consumers to protect our environment, reduce fuel consumption, and improve our air quality for future generations. All EPA SmartWay transportation programs result in significant, measurable air quality and/or greenhouse gas improvements while maintaining or improving current levels of other emissions and/or pollutants.
How do you become certified? Through a rigorous application process TLC provided the following historical information from calendar year 2008:
- Annual number of SmartWay and non-SmartWay providers TLC used (2,255)
- Annual number of total miles (54,062,309) and trips traveled (111,434)
- Emissions (CO2) from the trucking companies hired by TLC (112,857 tons)
- Emissions (CO2) from the equipment at TLC facilities (14,251 tons)
- Emissions (CO2) from trucks idling at TLC facilities (1,239 tons)
A score of 1.25 represents outstanding environmental performance. These Partners already are utilizing most of the commercially available fuel saving strategies and are actively evaluating the latest emerging technologies. Partners with scores of 1.25 are awarded the honor of displaying the SmartWay Transport Partner logo, EPA's symbol for superior fuel efficiency and environmental performance.
